Here are a few tools of the trade,

Of course to make encaustics you need wax. I use many types of wax, paraffin (basic candle wax), beeswax, and specially design wax specific for use in encaustic art. By mixing different amounts of each types I achieve my desired consistency; for example beeswax is very malleable and sticky, it is useful as a base layer because is adheres easily to most surfaces, is resistant to cracking and makes it easier to apply other elements such as string and paper. It is not useful as a surface layer because it remains malleable, and collects more dust to its sticky surface. I will often mix paraffin wax with the beeswax to make it firmer, shinier and less sticky. I even used a special wax to clean my brushes. Each wax has different properties making them each useful in different ways.

I use a hot plate to heat up wax in a variety of heat-resistant containers; including a kettle, old glass candle holders, and small metal dishes designed for use in encaustics. I apply the wax using different techniques, most of which involve a brush; only brushes made of real animal hair can be used. Synthetic bristles melt at these temperatures. I also have a many other types of tools, as you can see, some sculpting tools, knives and razor blades, and even some odd choices, like a comb for adding texture.

Not only does each piece of art go through several stages of metamorphosis but so does the artist. As I add to this page I hope to showcase the development of my art as well as my techniques. I often wonder if I am a better artist now that I have honed specific skills or if I was better off as a rookie, experimenting, often making mistakes, but sometimes fear of making a mistake can be worse than the mistake itself.

You can see here how many pieces transform, some to repair damage, others because after a while I feel that the piece needs a facelift in order to find a home. Just another example of why encaustics are such an interesting media. It can be transformed in so many ways, by adding and removing elements, much like a sculpture that is always fresh.

Happy Birthday Lauren!

Happy Birthday Lauren!
These are only the last two stages out of many, I have been adding to it almost as long as I have been friends with its new owner.
